Craniotomy

Overview

A craniotomy is a type of brain surgery in which a part of the skull is temporarily removed to access the brain. This procedure is used to treat various conditions such as brain tumors, aneurysms and traumatic brain injuries. Once the surgery is completed the bone flap is replaced. It is different from a craniectomy where the removed portion of the skull is not immediately put back.
